FAQ - Kraft Mac & Cheese

Should I be concerned about food and phthalates?
Our goal at Kraft Mac & Cheese is to provide you with delicious meals your family loves and you can feel good about serving.

We take your questions about phthalates and food safety and quality very seriously because we know moms and dads trust Kraft Mac & Cheese as a quality, tasty, and safe food for the family.

We want you to know that we do not add phthalates to Kraft Mac & Cheese. We are extremely rigorous in our food safety processes. We study every aspect of our mac & cheese recipes and production to ensure it meets all regulatory requirements before bringing a product to your grocery store and into your home.

The safety of phthalates has been assessed by the US Food and Drug Administration and other authorities, such as the Centers for Disease Control. The trace levels found in the one limited test of mac & cheese are well below any level of concern. Hundreds of servings of mac & cheese would need to be consumed daily over an entire lifetime in order to exceed levels determined as safe.

The presence of phthalates is widespread and can be found in a variety of food and personal care products. Kraft Mac & Cheese is safe, and like others in the food industry, we are working to learn more about how trace amounts of phthalates may be introduced into certain products and if there is anything else we can do to reduce or eliminate them.

We want you to feel as good as we do about eating Kraft Mac & Cheese and serving it to our families. If you have any specific concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us

We’ve also reduced saturated fats in our Shapes products and have taken steps to include more whole grains in our pasta without compromising the great taste you know and love.
Why do you use a powdered Cheese Sauce mix in Kraft Macaroni & Cheese?
Thanks for asking. Dried foods have been around since the dawn of time, in the form of spices, beans and soup mixes. They're convenient food choices and easy to prepare during a busy day.

Although dried foods are pretty easy to make, they do require a step to remove the water that's found in most foods.

And that's why you can't just shred a block of cheese and turn it into a powdered cheese sauce mix - there's too much moisture.

For our powdered Cheese Sauce Mix in Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, we start by making our own cheese. We then blend that cheese with other ingredients to make a cheese sauce that has the one-of-a-kind taste you love.

Then, similar to a food dehydrator you might have at home to dry out fruit like apples, we use a food dehydrator -- just a much larger version. This removes the moisture from the cheese sauce and turns our Cheese Sauce into dry powder.

By using our dry cheese sauce mix and adding your own milk and margarine or butter, you can make your batch of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese fresh anytime.

We believe convenience doesn't have to mean sacrificing good nutrition.

Busy parents who feed their families Kraft Macaroni & Cheese can feel good because it's made with quality ingredients and has 9 grams of protein and 10% daily value of calcium per serving.
